Roof leaks rarely appear directly below the opening that causes them. Water can enter at a chimney, run along a rafter and show up as a stain several feet away. That is why leak repair starts with investigation. John Expert Roofer traces leaks methodically, from the roof surface to the attic, so the repair addresses the real source.
If you have multiple leaks or an older roof, we will also tell you whether a broader roof repair or a roof replacement makes more sense.

Where Leaks Usually Start
In our experience, most leaks trace back to a handful of locations:
- Chimney flashing and deteriorated counter flashing
- Plumbing vent boots that have cracked with age
- Skylight frames and their flashing
- Valleys where two roof planes meet
- Wall and dormer transitions with missing step flashing
- Ice dams at eaves during winter
Our Leak Tracing Process
We ask when the leak appears: during heavy rain, wind-driven rain from a particular direction, or snowmelt. That pattern points to likely causes. We inspect the roof above the area, check the attic for water trails and staining, and examine nearby penetrations. Once the source is confirmed, we repair it with the appropriate flashing, sealant or roofing replacement.
Our blog on common causes of roof leaks on Long Island covers these sources in more depth.
What to Do While You Wait
Move belongings away from the drip, place a bucket or towels to catch water, and if a ceiling is bulging with water, keep people away from it. Take photos for your records. Do not climb onto a wet roof yourself. Call us and we will advise on next steps.
Leaks After Storms
If a leak appeared after high winds or a fallen branch, visit our storm damage roof repair page for what we do to secure and repair storm-related damage.
