What to Do After Storm Damage to Your Roof | Roslyn NY | John Expert Roofer

Safety first, then documentation and protection. A clear checklist for the hours and days after a storm.

After a strong storm passes, it is natural to want to check on your home right away. Knowing what to do, and what not to do, can protect your family and limit further damage. Storms on Long Island can bring high winds, heavy rain and falling trees, any of which can compromise a roof.

This checklist walks through the steps we recommend. For professional help, see our storm damage roof repair service.

Step 1: Put Safety First

Before looking at the roof, check for hazards. Stay away from downed power lines and report them to the utility. If a tree has fallen onto the house, keep people out of the rooms below until the structure has been assessed. Watch for sagging ceilings, which can collapse when saturated with water.

Do not climb onto the roof. Storm-damaged roofs are slippery, may have weakened decking and can hide hazards like loose debris.

Step 2: Look From the Ground

Walk around the house and look for missing shingles, lifted edges, damaged flashing, bent gutters and debris on the roof. Shingles or pieces of shingle in the yard are a clear sign of wind damage. Binoculars can help you see details without climbing a ladder.

Step 3: Check Inside

Look at ceilings and walls on the top floor for new stains, dripping or bulging. If the attic is safe to enter, check for wet insulation, water on the floor or daylight through the roof boards. Place buckets and move belongings away from any active leaks.

Even if you see no water inside, damage like broken shingle seals can lead to leaks in the next storm.

Step 4: Document Everything

Take photos and videos of damage outside and inside, including debris, roof damage visible from the ground and any interior water damage. Write down the date and time of the storm. This record is useful for your own files and for conversations with your insurance company.

Keep receipts for any emergency expenses, such as tarps or cleanup supplies.

Step 5: Prevent Further Damage

If the roof is open or leaking, temporary protection is the priority. Tarping by a professional can keep water out until permanent repairs are made. Avoid attempting this yourself on a wet or damaged roof.

Step 6: Contact Your Insurance Company

If you plan to file a claim, contact your insurer to understand your coverage and their process. Coverage decisions are made by your insurance company, so get answers about your policy directly from them. A roofer can document and explain the damage found during an inspection.

Step 7: Schedule a Professional Inspection

Some storm damage is subtle. Creased shingles and broken seals can be hard to see from the ground but weaken the roof. A professional inspection identifies all affected areas so repairs are complete. Depending on what is found, you may need a targeted roof repair, roof leak repair or, for severe damage on an older roof, a full replacement.
